Defend Your Data: Get the most out of Duo two-factor authentication

The DUO logo.

All students and employees are now using Duo two-factor authentication to protect academic, financial and personal information from misuse. But not everyone uses it the same way, so Information Technology Services has tips to optimize your experience.

  • Allow push notifications from Duo Mobile on your smartphone. It’s quicker than entering a code.

  • Print backup passcodes in case you lose your phone, get a new one or you’re unable to use it in class. At login.wvu.edu, click My Login then enter your credentials and authenticate with Duo. Click “Generate Printable Bypass Codes” to produce 10 single-use codes. When you run out, repeat this process.

  • Add a backup device, such as a tablet or display token. At login.wvu.edu, click My Login, enter your credentials and authenticate. Then click “Add a New Device” and follow instructions.

  • Click the “Remember me for 1 day” box on the authentication screen. This keeps you logged in for 24 hours using that device and browser.

  • Deny unknown requests. Tap the red button if you receive an authentication request and you weren’t trying to log in. Then immediately change your password.

Many online services, including email and social networks, offer built-in two-factor authentication to protect your personal accounts. Some are even compatible with Duo. Learn more about enabling that extra protection.
