A vigil is planned for 7 p.m. tonight (Monday, Oct. 29) to remember the victims of the Tree of Life Synagogue victims in Saturday’s attack in Pittsburgh. The hour-long vigil, sponsored by Jewish students at West Virginia University, will be held in Woodburn Circle and is open to the public.
In addition, Provost Joyce McConnell reminds faculty and students that the University is a diverse, inclusive and caring community, standing against all violence – particularly when it is motivated by hate and prejudice.
Should anyone feel the need for support, faculty and staff members should reach out to the Faculty and Staff Assistance Program.
Students should contact the Carruth Center, where counselors are available to meet with students individually or in small groups as desired Monday through Friday. After 5 p.m. on weekdays, and during the weekend, they can be reached via Carruth’s after-hour phone 304.293.4431. Carruth will also work in cooperation with on-site visits of counselors to campus events or gatherings where the presence of our counselors might be of emotional or educational benefit.
Dean of Students Corey Farris said, “Coming together in a time of tragedy is important for students and the community as we collectively remember those who lost their lives or were injured in this act of violence. WVU stands with the many students from the Pittsburgh area and Pennsylvania who attend WVU during this incredibly difficult time.”
