Talent Strategy team to host 2018 Diversity Symposium

As part of our continuing efforts to promote diversity and inclusiveness in the workplace, the Talent Strategy team will host its inaugural Diversity Symposium for regional employers:

When: Sept. 25, 8 a.m. to 4:15 p.m.

Where: WVU Erickson Alumni Center

The event is designed to provide employers in the greater-Morgantown area with information, tools and resources to help senior managers and talent management staff confidently move in a positive direction with their diversity initiatives. Topics of discussion will include:  

  • The business case for a diverse and inclusive workforce;

  • Understanding unconscious bias in the workplace;

  • How to survive an Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) audit;

  • How salary history questions can perpetuate the gender wage gap;

  • The #MeToo movement – what it means for employers;

  • Disability etiquette in the hiring process;

  • Transitioning veterans into the workforce;

  • LGBTQ+ and gender issues at work and during the hiring process; and

  • A special panel discussion to address comprehensive diversity topics.

Katrina Graham, assistant director of Equal Opportunity and interim head of Talent Strategy, said, “As West Virginia’s land-grant institution, West Virginia University historically has taken the lead in developing programs and services to support the region and its communities. That’s why the WVU Talent Strategy team is proud to host the 2018 Diversity Symposium for regional employers, which directly supports these efforts by the University.”

Charlotte Swiger, senior diversity outreach specialist and organizer of the 2018 Diversity Symposium said, “The region from Charleston, West Virginia, to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is home to a wide range of talent, experience, abilities and educational levels. Regional employers recognize that diversity and inclusiveness drive innovation and productivity within their organizations. And we are excited to provide employers with resources through this event to help them remain competitive in a global economy.”

Continuing education units will be available for attendees.
