ITS to eliminate both printing and computer repair services at end of spring semester

Information Technology Services is eliminating its commercial printing service at Bakers Ridge, and its computer and printer repair service at Brooke Tower at the end of the spring semester. Private-sector alternatives exist for both of these services.

Computer Repair and Assistance will stop accepting computers and printers at the close of business on Friday (May 4). All machines in ITS possession at that time will be repaired and returned as soon as possible.

Administrative units supported by ITS should contact the Service Desk at 304.293.4444 or ITSHelp@mail.wvu.edu to request help with computers, as they do now. All other departments and colleges with repair issues should work with their local IT directors. A list of private-sector providers is available on the Computer Repair page on the ITS website.

ITS recommends that all locally supported colleges and departments develop a regular “refresh” plan to ensure that WVU-owned computers remain under warranty. When purchasing new computers, ITS recommends buying the longest warranty available. ITS also recommends purchasing a few extra machines to have as loaners for faculty and staff awaiting repairs.

Printing and Copier Services will stop accepting new work orders May 18 and will complete all current jobs as soon as possible. If you are seeking business cards or stationery, you should continue to order through Mountaineer Marketplace.

ITS also recommends that departments keep printers under warranty or use the Managed Printer program.

ITS is eliminating these two services because it must be more efficient with its resources and structure the organization to deliver high-value, strategic business projects for the University as a whole. No other service reductions are currently planned.

ITS will close the CRA at Brooke Tower by May 31 and relocate general walk-up support to Lyon Tower. Services there will include ID card production, simple virus removal, operating system installation and test scanning.

ITS will also continue the Managed Printing service for faculty and staff; the MyPrinting service for students; Fuel Rod stations; copy centers at the Mountainlair and the Health Sciences Center; and Big Prints.
