Parents and 9th graders from the community are invited to participate in the research project, the Emotion Regulation in Parents and Adolescents Study. This project explores how teens and their parents define and pursue happiness, how their attitudes relate to other parts of their lives, and how parents’ attitudes and behaviors relate to their children’s. Both mothers and fathers or primary caregivers/guardians are invited to participate with their teen. A teen must have at least one parent/caregiver participate.
There are three parts of the study. The first is an in-person meeting with research staff. It takes about two hours, and takes place at a private location (the university, your home, or a room in a library). Parents and teens complete surveys and behavioral tasks. Questions pertain to your feelings, behaviors, activities, and functioning. Teens and parents are asked to complete two sets of follow-up surveys (either online or mailed) six months and one year after the initial meeting.
Each person (teen and parent) will receive $20 for completing each part of the study, and a $20 bonus if they do all three parts. So each participant can earn $80 total. All responses will be kept confidential; participants will not be identified by their responses. Participation is completely voluntary.
