Student Recreation Center improvements continue to progress

The WVU Rec Center.

Campus Recreation, in collaboration with Facilities Management, has been working to make improvements to the Student Rec Center in order to better serve students, reduce utility costs and reduce energy consumption.

A phased replacement of interior lighting is forecasted to reduce energy consumption by over 80 percent. Currently, light fixtures in both gym multi-court gyms and the pool have been converted from metal halide to LED. The next phase of interior lighting replacement will include the racquetball and squash courts, followed by the climbing wall floodlights. These lighting replacements have allowed Campus Recreation to reduce consumption while dramatically increasing user experience with appropriate light levels.

Less visible, but equally as important improvements include upgrading the digital controls system for the HVAC system. The new system will allow for more efficient and consistent operations, cut down on energy consumption and allow better response to temperature changes.

In the aquatics area, both pools will be drained at the end of the spring semester to allow for the replacement of the interior shell and installation of new underwater lights. This work will then run through the SRC’s annual Maintenance Shutdown; the pools will reopen shortly after the SRC reopens for the summer.

Fitness equipment upgrades and replacements will also be completed during the annual Maintenance Shutdown. This year’s equipment improvements will include updates to cardio equipment and group fitness equipment. Existing equipment will be deep cleaned and serviced during the Maintenance Shutdown.
