Call for art by health care professionals

Libraries’ Art in the Libraries committee, in collaboration with the WVU Health Sciences Center, is seeking visual artists working in the healthcare field at WVU Health Sciences and Hospital to participate in a group exhibition to take place in the fall 2018 in the Health Sciences Library.

“The field of medicine has given the world many great artists,” Libraries Exhibits Coordinator Sally Deskins said.

For some, art provides an avenue to express their thoughts on the relationship between medical professionals and their patients such as in Luke Fildes’ 1891 painting The Doctor or Thomas Eakins’ Gross Clinic (1875). Artwork can also provide a hobby, personal release or second profession as with mid-twentieth century illustrator Frank Netter and contemporary painter Lissa Rankin, who retired as an OBGYN to make art.

“We want to know what WVU health professionals are making visual art,” Deskins said.

Any part- or full-time staff or faculty may submit ready-to-display works of any media or theme for this exhibition. Art in the Libraries is interested in all types of work addressing contemporary issues or concerns, health or medical issues or concerns, or completely abstract artwork. The artist does not need to be “established”; any level will be considered.

To participate send images of the artwork or ideas to Deskins at sbdeskins@mail.wvu.edu. Deadline is May 31.

The exhibit area includes wall space and display cases in the Health Sciences Library and offers ample natural light and artificial overhead lighting. Artists are encouraged to visit the space before submitting.

Art in the Libraries develops exhibits and related programs in the Downtown Campus, Evansdale and Health Sciences libraries, highlighting the creative endeavors and scholarship of WVU faculty, staff and students. The program encourages the community to explore, reflect and discuss what they encounter in the Libraries.
