30th Women of Color Luncheon to feature the Honorable Meshea Poore as keynote speaker

The 30th annual Women of Color Luncheon is hosted by the Council for Women’s Concerns which is celebrating its 40th year at WVU.

The luncheon, which will take place Oct. 11 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Mountainlair Ballrooms, is an attempt to connect and inspire the campus and the community. The Honorable Meshea Poore is the keynote speaker.

Poore served in the West Virginia House of Delegates from 2009-2014. She passionately advocates for equality and justice from the courthouse to the White House. Poore was nationally recognized and named a “Game Changer” during her U.S. House of Representatives campaign for the West Virginia Second Congressional District and is seen as a rising star in politics.  She has mentored and consulted with hundreds of elected officials throughout the nation as they seek higher office.  

Poore earned her bachelor's degree from Howard University in Washington, D.C., her law degree from Southern University Law Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and is a graduate of the Women's Campaign School at Yale University. She is a former adjunct professor at West Virginia State University. Additionally, she served as faculty at the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University and will serve as a CAWP New Leadership faculty member at Gonzaga and Villanova University. Poore is an accomplished and sought after motivational speaker, public and political leadership consultant and strategist. Earlier this year, she was installed as president of the West Virginia State Bar, becoming the first African-American woman since the 1947 inception of the Bar to hold this position.

The Women of Color Luncheon is one of several events during WVU’s annual Diversity Week, held this year from Oct. 8-13, and sponsored by the Division for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. This year’s theme “One Mountaineer Family” will be recognized during the luncheon. Tickets for the luncheon are $18 per individual, and reservations can also be made for tables of eight or 10.
