Morgantown to honor fallen soldier during 6th annual observance of Gene Vance, Jr. Day

The City of Morgantown will honor fallen and wounded soldiers in observance of the 6th annual Gene Vance Jr. Day Thursday (May 18) at 1:30 p.m. at the Public Safety Building Plaza.

Sgt. Vance was killed in action May 19, 2002 during Operation Enduring Freedom when his unit came under fire while on patrol in eastern Afghanistan. Despite his critical injuries, Sgt. Vance saved the lives of two fellow Americans and 18 Afghani soldiers. He was awarded the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, Achievement Medal, Reserve Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.

The ceremony will be held at the foot of the statue of Colonel Zackquill Morgan. In the event of rain, the ceremony will be held in City Council Chambers.
