West Virginia University students who are in recovery will benefit from a scholarship established in honor of Cathy Yura, a long-time psychologist and former director of the WVU Collegiate Recovery Program who retired in December after more than 40 years at WVU.

The Cathy Yura Recovery Scholarship, created by the WVU Collegiate Recovery Program and West Virginia Sober Living, will grant a $1,000 scholarship annually to a full-time undergraduate or graduate student based on the following criteria:

• Has maintained a 3.0 cumulative GPA or 3.0 GPA after reentering college post recovery process

• Has been in sustained recovery for at least one year

• Actively involved in service efforts with WVU Collegiate Recovery and the greater Morgantown recovery community

• In addition to meeting these criteria, the ideal candidate will exemplify the compassion, generosity and kindness in service that Cathy Yura displayed during her tenure at WVU.

“This Collegiate Recovery Scholarship named in Cathy’s honor is a fitting tribute to her long tenure at WVU and specifically her outstanding work in the creation of the Collegiate Recovery Program,” said Nathan Harlan, executive director of the Office of Student Wellness. “Cathy has always been a relentless advocate for students and the creation of a collegiate environment that supports their success.”

“The recipients of this scholarship will share in the history of Cathy’s efforts and the furtherance of that recovery culture at WVU,” Harlan said.

Students must complete an application by Jan. 31. The recipient will be announced in May.

The scholarship was made through the WVU Foundation, the nonprofit organization that receives and administers private donations on behalf of the University.
