All employees should review the updated WVU Responsibility Statement

All faculty and staff should take a few minutes to review the responsibility statement they are agreeing to when you claim or renew your password at login.wvu.edu. As an employee of WVU, you share the responsibility of protecting University data and technology resources and are agreeing to:

  • Never share your Login credentials with anyone or use another person’s Login credentials. Take care to secure your own password and two-factor authentication device so they cannot be easily found and used by someone else. Never leave your computer without securing it by locking with a screen saver or logging out.

  • Confidential University data must be used for approved purposes only. You should only access it if it’s directly related to your job.

  • Always securely store federally-protected data in an institutionally-approved location. The Sensitive Data Protection Policy prohibits sending or accepting Social Security or credit card numbers via email and/or storing them on a computer.

  • Employees should not seek out or disclose SSNs or credit card numbers unless it is required by law. Student data protected by the Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act (FERPA) should be stored and accessed via a secure WVU system and never shared via phone or email. Securely destroy this confidential data by shredding it or erasing when it is no longer needed.

  • Never use University technology resources for unacceptable activities that are illegal, for personal commercial gain or for political endorsements.

To ensure compliance with applicable laws and policies, the University reserves the right to monitor its devices. WVU employees should not expect privacy for anything they create, store, send or receive using University-owned equipment or accounts.
