WVUCE-STEM invites locals to celebrate Computer Science Education Week by participating in an Hour of Code

The Center for Excellence in STEM Education invites the WVU community and locals to celebrate Computer Science Education Week, Dec. 4-10, by participating in an Hour of Code on Dec. 5 at the Downtown Library in Classroom 136, anytime between 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Serving as the largest learning event in history, reaching more than 100 million participants around the world, the Hour of Code is a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify “code.” The activity intends to show that anybody can learn the basics of coding and to broaden participation in the field of computer science.

“As we begin to grow a stronger community of computer science students and educators, we welcome novice and advanced coders alike to join us for an hour of code,” said Gay Stewart, WVUCE-STEM director. “With computing jobs now the number one source of all new wages in the U.S. and make up two-thirds of all projected new jobs in STEM fields, it’s critical we advance computer science education for our students and our educators who can teach computer science curriculum. The Hour of Code is a fun activity to jumpstart excitement in coding and computer science. We encourage all to participate and give coding a try.”

The Hour of Code has become a worldwide effort to celebrate computer science education and WVUCE-STEM encourages anyone to attend who is interested in trying out coding, wants to promote computer science education, or just needs an hour break from hectic schedules. If you are interested in attending, WVUCE-STEM encourages those to RSVP at stem.center@mail.wvu.edu.
