WVU Symphony Orchestra to play ‘concert café’ tonight

Violin player

The West Virginia University Symphony Orchestra will perform an intimate concert tonight (Oct. 19) in the Antoinette Falbo Theatre at WVU’s Creative Arts Center.

The program, which begins at 7:30 p.m., calls for forces as large as full orchestra down to as few as two musicians to perform a set inspired by music one might hear in the cafés of Europe or South America.

Johannes Brahms’s Hungarian Dances are based on csardas music that the composer heard in the cafés of Hungary. Astor Piazzolla’s Libertango is a taut, rhythmically driving evocation of the great Argentinian dance form - the tango.

The remainder of the program is devoted to the music of Kurt Weill as conductor Mitchell Arnold and WVUSO welcome guest performers Robert Chafin, tenor, and Sun Jung Lee, piano.

Tickets are limited for this event. To purchase, contact the WVU Box office at 304-293-SHOW or visit ticketmaster.com.
