History department to host panel discussion on racism, public monuments and legacies of Confederacy

A panel discussion titled “Historical Perspectives on Charlottesville: Heritage, Hate, History and Memory” will be held Thursday (Aug. 24) from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the Mountainlair, Rhododendron Room.

Recent events in Charlottesville, Virginia, reignited our ongoing national debate over racism, public monuments and the legacies of the Confederacy. In this panel, experts on the Civil War, the Civil Rights Movement and the politics of commemoration share their perspectives on the current controversy and situate Charlottesville within broader historical and cultural contexts.
