WVU to hold Great American Eclipse events

Solar eclipse

The Department of Physics and Astronomy and Extension Service, with the help of the Green Bank Observatory and the West Virginia Space Grant Consortium, are bringing the Great American Eclipse to campus Aug. 19-21.

The Department of Physics and Astronomy will host a pre-eclipse event Saturday (Aug. 19) from 9 a.m. to noon, where participants will receive “passports” that take them on a self-guided learning adventure full of mini-lectures, activities, planetarium shows and rooftop observing.

The Great American Eclipse will be seen across the continental United States Aug. 21, and is the first solar eclipse visible in the United States during the 21st century. The last time West Virginia saw a solar eclipse was in 1994, and the next eclipse is 2024.
