WVU Public Health professor supports health of state by supporting Gold Blue and You Campaign

Haslyn Hunte

WVU is considered one of West Virginia’s greatest assets, and the WVU School of Public Health is one of the biggest advocates in moving the state forward.

By being part of the School of Public Health, faculty, staff and students are able to make a positive impact on the state. One professor feels he is doing just this by not only teaching, but contributing to the University through Gold Blue and You, the campus-wide, faculty and staff campaign.

Since 2013, Haslyn Hunte has been an assistant professor in the Department of Social Behavioral Health Sciences at the School of Public Health at WVU.

“I accepted the faculty position at WVU because I wanted to work at a school of public health that serves the local community,” said Hunte. “Often, too many academic programs and schools neglect the residents in the local community where the school is located. West Virginia is a leader in many indicators of public and population health, however, the state ranks very low compared to other states with regards to many important indicators that ensures a healthy population. I feel that the [School of Public Health] and WVU as a whole have rightfully accepted this challenge to improve the health of West Virginians.”

But while Hunte continuously works to better the health of West Virginians through educating others about public health, he also feels financial contributions are just as important in offering individuals the education and tools needed to succeed.

“I give back because I am a resident of West Virginia,” Hunte added. “I know the University serves the community, as it should, so I want to support the University in its mission to make West Virginia thrive. More so, I also give back because I want to show that we all are a part of the solution, not only the wealthy individuals and corporations.”

The Department of Social Behavioral Health Sciences is one of the newest programs within the Health Sciences Center at WVU, so adequate funding is crucial in the recruitment of students, faculty and staff, as well as providing the knowledge and assistance needed to work side-by-side with the people of West Virginia.

“I contribute to the Department because it’s is my home department, and the funds are intended to be used in the process of recruiting talented students, faculty and to assist students as they engage in service activities in Morgantown and throughout the state,” he said.
